The aim of this thesis is to study the novels of Yi Ok (李鈺) who was almost contemporary with Yeon-am (燕岩) Pak Chi-won (朴趾源) and is not so well-known considering his literary capacity. As preliminary examination, the meaning of Jeon(傳), its adaptation in novel and its meaning in Yi Ok s(李鈺) novels are surveyed first. The emphasis of the present study was laid on clarifying the literary worth and the significance in the history of Korean novel through comparison with the early novels in respect of the structural analysis. The derived conclusions are as follows. 1. Retaining its own type, Jeon (傳) had been accommodated into the form of prose narrative literature(散文敍事文學), preceding or running parallel with the novel. Accordingly, we don t have to say that his works are Jeon(傳), something different from novel, because there are traces of Jeon(傳) in his novel. 2. Once-and-away incident, which is the section of life, is dealt with intensively, while the early novels dealt with the life story of the hero. But in respect of the refinement of the organic relation between incidents, there is considerable difference among his works. 3. While in the early novels the characters are upper-class or unreal persons, they are real persons from lower-class townsmen. They assume resistent and active attitude toward unjust society. 4. The complications of the characters have the phase of challenge to the established society which becomes corruption in consequence of absurdity and misdeeds. However, their deeds is never destructive. They always pursue the restoration of the ideal society and ideal type of human being. 5. His novels have the unitary background of time and space, while the early novels have dual one; this world and the world beyond. 6. Through the social aspects reflected in his works, we can notice his awakend consciousness of creative writing which intended to satirize and criticize realistically the social phenomena at that time. As we know in the above, Yi Ok s(李鈺) novels are not only an extention of the early novels, but also, approached more advanced modern features. When the history of Korean Chinese character novel of the late stage of Cho seon dynasty(朝鮮朝) is argued, Yi Ok(李鈺) must be ranked with Yeon-am(燕岩) Pak Chi-Won(朴趾源).
