Verbatology or Linguistics of Speech

The authors in summary form present the content of their book starting from the concept of narrative, on the one hand, and genre, on the other. Starting from Bakhtin s comprehension of spoken genre, we here consider a minimal form of testimony from the point of view of its functional and stylistic characteristics (colloquial, legal, scientific, etc.). Therefore, genre and narrative can be defined as an identical, but functionally divergent, linguistic unit, and allow observation of the divergent viewpoints. In this sense, it becomes clear that the genre and the narrative can be combined under a common term verbative. Verbatology, however, does not remain at the level of analysis of structural properties and types of verbative, but is committed to monitoring its exposure in the process and the use of verbative. Verbatology, in other words, is the general theory of linguistic structures and their functions. It deals with the construction and use of linguistic units, above all – words, in the process of “verbalization of the world”.
