‘Russian Language and Culture’ Course and Class Discussions: Focusing on Collaborative Group Discussion and Peer Assessment Issues

This study mainly aims at structuring and developing methodology to activate class discussions in ‘Russian Language and Culture’ course at college level. A revised Collaborative Group Discussion (CGD) is adopted for enhancing group discussion. The new version of CGD is characterized by no protocol, but blind peer assessment, and detailed preand post-activities. First, this study examines how the newly developed CGD is applied in detail to the ‘Russian Language and Culture’ course during two semesters. Futhermore, it deals with peer assessment issues. Specifically, the blind peer assessment is very important tool to monitor the discussion sessions and relieve the burden of a peer evaluator. We examine the reliability and validity of peer assessment on a small scale. As previous studies the reliability among peer evaluators is not high, but the validity between peer assessment and selfassessment (instead of teacher assessment) is proved.
