  • 24

The purpose of this article is to research the Russian festival, a characteristic phenomenon of Russian culture, based on the analysis of Gogol s literary works, “St. John’s Eve” and “Christmas Eve”, and also to study the various forms and expressions, reflected in the Russian festival culture. The tasks to achieve it are as follows: 1) Consider the overall nature and changes in the Russian festivals and their position and role in Russian culture. 2) Study in detail the major festivals of Russia, Ivan kupala (St. John’day) and Svjatki (Christmas week) 3) Analyze how the festival culture is reflected in Gogol s works through analyzing his works. Ultimately, this article aims to study the Russian festival culture as an expression of language in literary works, and to identify the relationship among festival culture, language, and literary works. The reasons for selecting Gogol s works for the analysis are that the titles of the works are borrowed from the festival and that they clearly show the contradictory combination of Christian and pagan elements.
