A Study of the Concept of ‘Home’ in Russian

  • 7

This study investigates the concept of ‘Home’ in Russian idioms from a cognitive linguistic perspective (conceptual components and shaped components). Through the analysis of the data, we found that in the consciousness of the Russians the greatest feature of ‘Home’ is the binary opposition ‘own – others’. At home, people can feel comfortable and free. The house protects people from the attacks of the outside world. In conceptual components, the concept of ‘Home’ was used in a metonymical sense. House is replaced with the separate spaces of the house (the roof, wall, door, threshold, courtyard, stove, etc.) and family members such as a husband and a wife. In the components, the concept of ‘Home’ was used in a metaphorical sense of own space, society (social organization, homeland, etc.), and man (appearance, cognitive ability, etc.). Understanding the concept of the ‘Home’ as an integral part of man, which is endowed with physical, social, and cultural meanings, is through metonymy and metaphor.
