The joy of creation: newsletter editing as a form of writing competence in teaching Polish as a foreign language on the basis of experience from Krakow, Tokyo, Guangzhou and Seoul

The writing competence in a foreign language seems to be the greatest difficulty for the learners. Students’ attitudes toward the traditional methods are sceptical. Nevertheless, the new glottodidactic studies reveal that the foreign language teaching curriculum should not neglect this competence. The negligence may adversely affect the communication skills, the understanding competence or development of the vocabulary resource. Furthermore, in various real-life situations, the knowledge of text editing in foreign languages turns out to be very useful. This articel presents an innovative curriculum of writing in teaching Polish by means of a newsletter editing. A project method is applied and the convention of a transfer to the imaginary space of a newsletter editorial office enables the application to be fun with games and role playing elements in the teaching process. Furthermore, due to such educational measures, other linguistic competencies are practised - mainly the speaking competence, but also cultural competence of the participants. Their motivation is boosted and the level of anxiety related to the course difficulties is reduced. The efficiency of the discussed project has been verified in 4 academic centres where Polish is being taught as a foreign language: at the Jagiellonian University in Poland, at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in South Korea, at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in Japan and at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China. The discussed project refers to the teaching of text editing in Polish as a foreign language. Moreover, this method can be applied as a template in teaching of other languages.
