An Influence of Palatalization on the CVC clusters in Russian: focusing on bilabials /p, b/ and dentals /t, d/

This study aims at the study of the influence of palatalization on the CVC clusters in Russian, focusing on bilabials /p, b/ and dentald /t, d/, and the following results were obtained. As a result of comparing the duration of onset consonants in CVC, CVC’ and C’VC, C’VC’, which are made by consonants p, b, t, d and vowels y/i, e/je, a/ja, o/jo, u/ju, this study showed that soft consonants in C’VC, C’VC’ clusters are found to be longer than hard consonants in CVC, CVC’ clusters, except for some types with bybъ. This study showed that subjects WA ~ WD pronounced the shortest vowel in C’VC’ (83.75%) and pronounced the longest vowels in C’VC (51.25%) and CVC’ (31.25%). Thus, we found that the length of the posterior vowel in CVC clusters is closely related to the quality of the consonant. If the syllable is consisted of the soft consonant and the soft consonant in CVC clusters, the length of the vowel is remarkably shortened. On the other hand, when the syllable consists of the hard consonant and the soft consonant (CVC’) or the soft consonant and the hard consonant (C’VC) the length of the vowel was found to be longer. And this study showed a consistency that the F1 and F2 after onset consonant consistently differs depending on the size of the openness and fronting of the vowel and showed a consistency that F1 after soft consonant is less than F1 after hard consonant, F2 after soft consonant are larger than F2 after hard consonant. However, F1 and F2 before hard or soft consonant does not follow the general pattern that they represent after hard or soft consonant. And there are cases that F1 after soft consonant is not less than F1 after hard consonant, F2 after soft consonant is not larger than F2 after hard consonant. And this study showed that the intensity after hard consonant is bigger than that after soft consonant, and pitch after soft consonant is bigger than that after hard consonant. And the intensity is the greatest in CVC, and the lowest in C’VC’. And The intensity before hard or soft consonant is about half that after hard or soft consonant.
