Synonymy in constructions has been one of the most intriguing topics in semantics and lexicography. Cognitive Linguistics insists that absolute synonymy does not exist or it be hardly noticeable in natural language. A couple of constructions carry similar meanings which can be used in a context interchangeably. Each construction has its own unique semantic characteristics which cannot be replaced with any semantic modification. The semantic modification can be explained by the concept of modality. Modality is a so-called pragmatic category which reveals the subject’s intension or interpretation of the given situation. Syntactic change reflects semantic change. The current research investigates the subtle semantic distinctions in so-called synonymous constructions. Russian SJA constructions are the subject of the research. Especially impersonal constructions derived from ordinary intransitive constructions are under investigation. The investigation reveals that there is semantic and modal difference in the Russian SJA constructions.
