Soviet Newspeak as a Ritual Language

  • 5

This article examines the specifics of Newspeak as the political language of the Soviet period and the government s attitude to it in connection with the ritualization of society. In the public political discourse of the Soviet era there were special rules of politics completely regulated by the requirements of the Soviet language standard, and as a result there arose a stable system of norms. This new language of a totalitarian society was called Soviet newspeak. As a result of the analysis it became clear that in the Soviet totalitarian society the Newspeak as ritual language lost humorous elements, and at that time strengthened some elements, in particular, euphemisms, abbreviations, clichés, nominalization and the elimination of the subject. All of them, in turn, lead to a desemantization and hide the reality, create a pseudo-reality, form the accurate opposition friend or foe and in the end manipulate the people. Also, the purism, perceived in the relations of Soviet regime to a Newspeak and its language policy, corresponds to the essence of the rituals, the language of which is assigned to stylistic standardization, depersonalization and unification of thoughts.
