Russian Loanwords in Kyrgyz Language

The purpose of this article is to provide a typology of Russian loanwords in Kyrgyz language. The resource of this study is the Kyrgyz-Russian, Russian-Kyrgyz bilingual dictionary published in Bishkek, 2012. The framework of the analysis is based on Haspelmath (2008)’s Analyzability. This category is classified with the following sub-categories:1) unanalyzable, 2) semi-analyzable, 3) analyzable derived, 4) analyzable compound, 5) analyzable phrasal. First, the unanalyzable loanwords contain the words without any changes from the original Russian words. Also, the first sub-category includes the words assimilated to Kyrgyz language in terms of phonetic/phonological and orthographic features, as well as the words with the change of their gender or number category. The second sub-category is ‘analyzable’, which is derived with a Russian lexical morpheme and a Kyrgyz grammatical morpheme. In this study, the derived words are reclassified with a lexical and syntactic derivation. Russian loanwords in Kyrgyz language show all these lexical and syntactic derivatives, and the syntactic derivation more often appears among the derivatives. Furthermore, Kyrgyz syntactic derivatives are derived from irregular forms, so it is difficult to expect a derivational direction and systematic derivational structure. Finally, ‘analyzable compound’ is a word combined with a Russian noun and a Kyrgyz verb. It is productive in Kyrgyz language to form a verb by compounds as well as by syntactic derivations.
