Czech Idiomatic Expressions on Colors and Their Symbolic Meanings

  • 5

This paper contains an analysis of the semantic meanings of various colors and their idiomatic expressions in the Czech language in terms of the aspect of descriptive adjectives that are related to those colors. Study of the relation between the sense of sight and language usage in the Czech language in also the core study skills for the Korean bohemists into a communication context. Czech idiomatic expressions involving color and the symbolic meanings of colors on various semantic levels reveal and identify language features unique to the Czech nation and their language culture. Idiomatic expressions in this category could be effectively explained by the principle of iconicity. Idiomatic similes based on iconicity cross the boundary toward metaphor and symbol through social convention. In the Czech language, adjectives describing colors consist of compound predicates or a compound sentence with a comparatum. In such phrases, these adjectives can indicate markedness. As an autosemantic unit, adjectives that describe colors bring out the fact in sharp relief in this idiomatic expression containing semantic markedness. Some adjectives can be classified as synonyms or antonyms in terms of their semantic features, specifically in the range of idiomatic expressions. In some cases, however, these adjectives describing colors by reference to a tertium comparationis are eliminated in idiomatic expressions and a comparatum is sufficient for the definitions of rhetorical concepts. Verbs appearing frequently in phrases of this category, such as mít and být, have alternative internal transformation of structure with the preposition s + instrumental. As fixed expressions, Czech idioms that include color descriptive adjectives, even though limited in range, contain some adjectives or comparatum that allow more flexible lexical items for their paradigmatic substitution. These verbs that are substituted for adjectives often give more descriptive features in their fixed idiomatic expressions. Adjectives describing colors also motivate word-to-noun derivation, maintaining their semantic view on the motivated lexical items. In the range of this derivational paradigm, semantic sequence is generally clear and anomality or illogicality of lexical meaning are minimalized.
