Russian explanatory dictionaries have a long history of hundreds of years. The types have changed in time. Modern dictionaries contain words of ordinary use, while ancient dictionaries had only incomprehensible words related to religious texts or untranslated words of Greek or Latin origin. The ancient dictionaries are similar to contemporary dictionaries of foreign words, and to a certain extent, have similarity to encyclopedia in explaining scarcely-used terms. Russian Soviet linguistics presupposes and suggests a perfect semantic description and research has focused on describing Russian from synchronic and diachronic perspectives. As a result of the research, in the late 20th century new dictionary types appeared.
