On Semantics Of Adjectival Derivatives in Contemporary Serbian Language

Derived adjectives do not form their polysemantic structures in the same way as the nouns they were derived from do. This paper shows that suffixes hinder to a great extent the development of the secondary meaning by the process of metaphor and synecdoche. At the same time, it shows that a metaphor could be realized through the process of identification or comparison. Its more typical form is realized through the process of identification, as in the examples On je medved or On je zlato. Comparison is less convincing way of a metaphor manifestation. This type of metaphor will be called delayed metaphor (metafora sa zadrškom). It occurs in derived forms, for example On je medvedast or On je zlatan. In both the former and latter examples, On je medved and On je medvedast, the subject is described in the same way. The subject is the third person singular of the personal pronoun -on, and it is described directly by the predicate nominative (je [=copula] + predicate). However, the deep semantics of these examples shows that the metaphor by which the subject is described could be complete (first example) or incomplete (second example). Thus, it can be concluded that there are another important component which a suffix introduces into semantics of derivatives.
