신라 장구진의 위치 비정에 대하여

A study on the consideration of the location of the Silla’s Janggujin(長口鎭)

長口鎭은 통일신라 서북의 軍鎭이다. 현재까지 장구진의 위치는 장연군이나 송화군 일대로 비정되어 왔는데, 최근에는 송화군의 당관포로 보는 경향이 강한 편이다. 지명 자체를 검토해 볼 때, 長口와 長山은 동일한 지명을 나타내는 것으로 여겨진다. 예부터 장산곶을 돌아 항해하는 것 자체가 어려웠기 때문에 조선시대까지도 조운이 불편하였고, 군사 대응도 장산곶 이북과 이남으로 나누어 이루어졌다. 이러한 점을 감안하면 신라 또한 장산곶 이남부터 장악한 이후 점차 장산곶 이북으로 진출했다고 볼 수 있다. 신라의 북진 과정을 고려할 때 8세기 중엽 신라가 황해도 서해안 전체를 장악했다고 보기는 어려우며, 장산곶 이남과 백령도를 연계해 통제했을 가능성이 크다. 서해의 주요 항로는 연안항로와 횡단항로가 있었으며, 이 두 노선이 수렴하는 곳은 장산곶과 백령도 일대이다. 신라의 서북 군진으로서 장구진도 두 노선을 통제하기 위해 설치된 것으로 판단된다. 백령도와 가장 가까운 육지는 장산곶 남쪽이며, 그곳에 오차진이 위치하고 있다. 吾叉鎭은 원래 오차포였고, 또 오차포의 원 위치는 보다 동쪽에 위치한 舊鎭里였다. 구진리는 고려시대 安瀾倉이 위치했던 곳으로 황해도 서남부 육로와 해로의 교통결절지였다. 이곳에 바로 장구진이 설치되었던 것으로 추정된다.

The Janggujin(長口鎭) was an important military city of the northwest in the Unification Shilla. The Janggujin is related to the northern advance of the Silla. The Janggujin is not recorded in Korean history books, but is recorded in Chinese history books. The Janggujin is known to be located to the north of the Jansangot(長山串). However, looking at the traffic route, it cannot be located north of the Jansangot. According to the records of the Joseon period, it was difficult to navigate around the Jansangot. Also, looking at Japan s nautical chart, it was difficult to navigate around the Jansangot. Between the Jansangot and the Backryongdo (白翎島), the flow of seawater is fast. Therefore, the Janggujin is considered to be located to the south of the Jansangot. The Janggujin can be defined with the Ochajin(吾叉鎭). The Ochajin has good conditions as a port. It was a good port even in the Goryeo period. It must have been an important military city even in the Silla period.
