메이지시대 초기 일본 문헌 속 이순신의 출현과 그 의미

A Study the Discourse of Yi Sun-sin in the Early Literature of the Meiji Period in Japan

이 글은 일본의 메이지(明治) 시대 초기 문헌 속에서 이순신(李舜臣)이 어떻게 그려져 있는가에 대해 살펴본다. 메이지 초기에는 이순신이 기록된 문헌이 일본에서 다량 생산되었는데, 그 배경에는 일본의 정한론(征韓論)과 도요토미 히데요시(豐臣秀吉)에 대한 관심이 있었다. 이들은 1870년대와 1880년대에 성행하였는데, 대부분 에도(江戸) 시대 문예장르의 형식을 취하고 있었으며, 내용 또한 에도 시대 히데요시의 일대기인 『다이코키(太閤記)』 임진왜란 관련 문헌군의 영향을 강하게 받았다. 이들은 전 시기의 임진왜란 관련 문헌 중 상업적으로 히트한 내용을 그대로 가져오거나 이를 축약ᆞ취사선택하는 방법을 선택한 경우가 많았다. 이에 따라 에도 시대에 이순신이 조선을 대표하는 강력한 수군장수로 묘사된 것과 같이, 이 시기에도 이순신은 여전히 비범한 인물로 일본 문헌속에 서술되어 일반 대중에게 전파되었다. 비록 이들 문헌의 사료적 가치는 높지 않으나, 적지 않은 수가 간행되어 당시 일본의 이순신 담론을 지배했다는 점을 고려하면 이들이 이순신을 어떻게 그리고 있는지를 살펴보는 것은 일본의 이순신 담론 흐름을 이해하는 데에 중요한 지점이다.

The objective of this paper is to examine how admiral Yi Sun-sin is depicted in the early literature of the Meiji period in Japan. In the early Meiji period, literature on Yi Sun-sin was produced in large quantities in Japan. In the background, there was interest in the Japanese Seikanron and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. They flourished in the 1870s and 1880s, and most of them took the form of the literary genre of the Edo period, and their contents were also strongly influenced by Taikoki, the biography of Hideyoshi in the Edo period, and literature groups related to the Imjin War. In many cases, they took the commercially hit content from the literature related to the Imjin War of the previous period, or chose to abbreviate it. Accordingly, just as Yi Sun-sin was portrayed as a powerful naval commander representing Joseon in the Edo period, Yi Sun-sin was still described in Japanese literature as an extraordinary figure and spread to the general public during this period. Although the historical value of these documents is not high. However, considering the fact that many were published and dominated the Japanese discourse of Yi Sun-sin at that time, examining how they portrayed Yi Sun-sin is an important point in understanding the flow of the Japanese discourse on Yi Sun-sin.
