네모틀 및 세리프 여부에 따른 한글 활자체의 가독성과 시감각 특성

Legibility and Visual Sensory Properties of Korean Typefaces Depending on Presence of Square Frame and Serif Decoration

한글 활자체는 일반적으로 세리프 장식의 유무와 네모틀 여부에 따라 세리프 또는 산세리프활자체, 네모틀 또는 탈네모틀 활자체로 분류된다. 한글 활자체들이 가지는 시감각 요소들을 분석하고 읽기 경험에 미치는 영향을 규명하기 위해 본 연구에서는 이 두 가지 요인에 따라 선정된 48가지 한글 활자체의 덩이글 영상에 대해 주관적 가독성을 평가하고 이에 따른 활자체들의 시감각 특성을 분석했다. 그 결과 네모틀 활자체의 덩이글이 탈네모틀 활자체에 비해 평가된 가독성이 높았으나, 세리프 및 산세리프 여부에 따른 차이는 발견되지 않았다. 다음으로, 경계선, 꼭짓점, 특징점 및 얼룩의 개수를 추정하기 위해 영상처리 분석을 실시한 결과 네모틀 활자체가 탈네모틀 활자체에 비해 시감각 정보량이 많았으나, 세리프와 산세리프 활자체 사이에는 이러한 차이가 없었다. 이 결과는 세리프 유무와 관계없이, 탈네모틀보다 네모틀 활자체의 가독성이 더 우수함을 시사하며, 나아가 네모틀 활자체가 보유한 더 많은 시감각적 정보량에 기인한 것으로 짐작된다. 결론적으로, 가독성 높은 활자체 디자인을 위해서는 네모틀 활자체를 사용하는 것이 바람직할 수 있다.

Korean typefaces in general are categorized as either of serif or sanserif and square or non-square typefaces according to whether they have serif decorations or not, and whether they are squared-shaped or not. In order to analyze the visual sensory factors of Korean typefaces and to investigate the effect on the reading experience, the present study analyzed the subjective legibility and visual sensory characteristics for 48 Korean text images made of typefaces selected according to these two factors. The rated legibility was higher for the texts of square typefaces than those of non-square typefaces while no such difference was found between the serif and san-serif ones. The subsequent image processing analyses for estimating the number of edges, corners, keypoints and blobs also yielded a greater amount of visual sensory information in the texts of square typefaces than those of non-square types while showing little difference between the serif and san-serif ones. The results indicate that regardless of the presence of serifs, Korean texts made of square typefaces would have better legibility than those of non-square typefaces, and further suggest that such advantage may arise from the greater of visual sensory information in the square typefaces. In conclusion, it may be desirable to use a square typeface for a highly readable typeface design.
