The movement of oral commissure after lengthening temporalis myoplasty for severe facial palsy induced by skull base surgery

Background : Patients who experience facial paralysis often suffer from long-term facial sequelae that can make it difficult for the patients to appropriately display facial expressions. Therefore, there is no doubt that it is very important that the treatment of facial paralysis that can be caused by surgery or the tumor itself is surely treated without major side effects. Methods : Eight patients underwent surgery for lengthening temporalis myoplasy (LTM) for facial nerve palsy January 2020 to April 2021. After surgery, we analysis motional vector at normal side and surgical side and horizontal angle of mouth excursion at resting and smile, difference of dynamic oral movement Results : Horizonal angles of mouth excursion was different according to three smile type. Difference of motional vector at normal and surgical side was about 3 degrees. All eight patients after LTM, horizontal angle of mouth excursion at resting and smile, difference of dynamic oral movement was symmetry and has favorable smile. It is considered to be very suitable for the treatment of one of the facial paralysis, so we would like to introduce the treatment results. Conclusions : Through smile type and vector analysis of normal and surgical side, we minimized the difference of horizontal angle and dynamic oral movement. LTM is very important treatment of facial paralysis.
