문학 읽기를 통한 주체의 윤리성 발현

Emergence of Ethical Subjectivity through Literary Reading

본고는 문학이 지닌 근원적인 힘을 윤리와 연관하여 탐구하는 데 목적을 둔다. 문학은 독자와의 긴밀한 뒤섞임을 통해서 완성되는 예술일 뿐 아니라 이를 통해 독자 스스로의 주체성도 큰 변동을 수용한다. 읽기의 과정 안에서 독자는 문학작품을 완전히 대상화할 수 없다. 문학 읽기의 행위는 독자로서의 주체성이 그 스스로 의 경계를 일부 지우면서 텍스트와 융합될 것을 요구하기 때문이다. 독자는 오로지 이 긴밀한 모호함과 혼동의 과정을 스스로 통과하면서 텍스트를 이해할 수 있다. 따라서 읽기를 통해 주체는 대상을 향한 독재적인 통제를 잃어버릴 뿐 아니라 대상에 의해 압도되는 경험을 겪는다. 본고는 문학 읽기의 과정에서 독자로서의 주체성이 중단되는 사건이 발생함에 주목하려 한다. 특히 독자가 문학작품을 읽어 해석함에 있어 이는 의미와 의미가 빈틈없이 접합되는 매끄러운 과정이 아니라는 점에 집중할 것이다. 반복되는 의미의 단절에도 불구하고 독자가 읽기에 빠져드는 것이 주체성이 지닌 근원적인 윤리성에 의해 가능하다고 보기 때문이다. 다시 말해, 주체가 텍스트가 내포한 이해불가능성을 직시하면서도 이 과정에 자발적으로 임할 때, 이것이 주체성이 인식의 외부를 감지하는 윤리적 사건일 가능성이 있다는 것이다. 이를 논증하기 위해 울프강 이저를 중심으로 한 독자 비평 이론과 숭고, 에마뉴엘 레비나스의 윤리학을 살펴보고자 한다.

This paper aims to study the ultimate influence of literary reading over human beings in a relation with ethics. Not only does a literary work complete itself through an interweaving relationship with a reader, but also the reader him/herself stands overwhelming emotions that could possibly strike his/her solid subjectivity. The reader is not able to objectify the text in the operation of reading. That is because literary reading requires the reader to partly blur his/her own boundary and to interweave with the text. The reader can grasp understanding of the text by only going through this ambiguity and confusion. The reader loses his/her control over the text, is overwhelmed by it and his/her solid subjectivity immediately breaks in this passage. The reader engages in the process of reading even though the text constantly interrupts the understanding. In this context, it is possible to state that there is ethical subjectivity emerging when the reader voluntarily puts him/herself in the passage of going through infinite suspensions of meaning in the activity of reading. In other words, it could be an ethical event that the subject confronts the alterity by noticing that something impossible to understand is manifested but still engages in the process. To discuss this possibility that the ethical subjectivity emerges in the process of reading, this paper focuses on studies of reader reception theories especially by Wolfgang Iser, theories on the Sublime and Emmanuel Levinas’ Ethics.
