Shelley’s Philosophy of Love: with a Focus on Epipsychidion

셸리는 낭만주의 시인들 가운데 사랑에 대해 가장 깊은 고찰을 한 시인이었다. 그는 『에피싸이키디온』을 비롯한 다수의 연애시와 산문에서 사랑에 대한 자신만의 고유한 이론을 정립하였다. 셸리의 1821년 작 『에피싸이키디온』은 그가 이탈리아에서 만난 테레사 비비아니라는 젊은 여성에게 헌정한 작품이다. 그의 가장 긴 연애시인 이 작품에서 셸리는 사랑의 이상적인 형태를 제시한다. 셸리가 연정의 대상인 에밀리아(비비아니의 별칭)를 ‘누이’라고 부르는 데서 그가 성적인 결합을 넘어서는 영혼의 융합, 서로가 서로의 일부가 되는 사랑을 갈망함을 알 수 있다. 그러나 “얽히지 않은 혼합”을 이상적 사랑의 특징으로 제시하는 데서 드러나듯 셸리는 개인성의 상실을 바람직한 것으로 보지는 않는다. 셸리의 일부일처제 비판은 비윤리적인 주장으로 오해받을 수도 있지만, 그의 입장에선 논리적 당위성이 있다. 사랑이 이미 식어버린 결혼을 낡은 제도에 얽매여 억지로 유지하는 것은 스스로 사랑의 능력을 퇴보시키는 결과를 낳는다. 오직 한 사람과 평생 부부관계를 유지할 것을 요구하는 결혼제도에 대한 공격은 셸리가 사랑을 상상력과 별반 다르지 않은 것으로 파악했기 때문으로도 이해할 수 있다. 셸리의 철학에서 사랑과 상상력은 거의 유사한 속성을 지닌다. 둘 다 내면세계와 외부세계가 이루는 조화로운 관계에서 발생한다. 셸리에게 상상력이 자유의 이념이 실현된 이상사회의 모습을 구체적으로 그릴 수 있는 능력이라면, 사랑은 그 이상사회를 실현할 수 있는 강력한 수단이다.

Shelley had a deeper interest in the nature of love than any other poet in the Romantic era. He formulated his own theory of love in a number of his poems including Epipsychidion as well as in prose essays such as On Love. Epipsychidion, written in 1821, was devoted to Teresa Viviani, a young aristocratic woman whom the Shelleys befriended in Italy. The most extensive poetic inquiry into ideal forms of romantic love among his love poems, Epipsychidion offers “unentangled intermixture” as an apt description of the nature of ideal love--love in which each partner’s subjectivity is kept intact while being blended together. The term “sister” by which the poetic speaker calls Emilia (i.e. Viviani) reveals his fervent desire for a union with her in more than sexual terms. Shelley’s bitter criticism levelled at monogamy, though it seems ethically unacceptable, becomes justifiable on the grounds that being chained to a monogamous relationship is likely to substantially impair your innate ability to love. It is worthy of note that Shelley perceives love in the terms used to describe imagination; in other words, love and imagination, to his way of thinking, have many properties in common. Sometimes the two words are almost interchangeable. For Shelley, love is the most reliable means to progress toward attaining the ideals of a free society--ideals that can be embodied in concrete terms in the poet’s imagination.
