Mongolia – Russia Relations “Good Neighbors” Strengthening Strategic Partnership

  • 9

Since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between USSR and Mongolia in November 1921, the states have developed close diplomatic ties and cooperation despite the changes in the governments in 1990s. The paper aims to provide general outlook on the recent “Good Neighbor” relations between Russia and Mongolia with the reference to the 100 years of the diplomatic cooperation celebrated in the year 2021 and examines three different aspects of cooperation between the states. The paper investigates how the countries are working on increasing trade volume between Mongolia and eastern regions of Russia that would promote further mutual economic benefits and increased Mongolia’s exports. In addition, the energy sector is explored in relation to electric power discussions between the two states and the “triangular partnership” between Mongolia, Russia, and China that aims to connect the three countries with the gas pipeline “Soyuz Vostok 2”. Finally, current collaboration between Russia and Mongolia in the transportation sector (railways) that aims to promote greater trade and tourism is also examined in the paper.
