평등의 교육적 관계 고찰

On the Educational Relation based on the Equality of the School in Masschelein and Simons

오늘날 학교교육 정상화 혹은 학교교육 개혁에 대한 요구가 거세지는 가운데, 얀 마스켈라인과 마틴 시몬스는 학교를 변론하는 형식으로 이 현상에 답한다. 본 연구는 이들 논의에 기반하여 교사-학생의 교육적 관계를 논의한다. 랑시에르의 평등론에 기초한 마스켈라인과 시몬스의 학교평등론을 토대로 본 연구는 우선 기존 교육평등론의 문제를 분배적 관점과 시간성의 차원에서 제기한다. 랑시에르는 교육을 사회적 평등 실현을 위한 도구로 이해하는 기존 교육학의 문제를 지적하며, 말하는 존재 간의 지적평등을 강조한다. 그는 특히 설명을 매개로 구성된 기존의 교사-학생의 불평등한 위계적 관계를 비판한다. 한편 마스켈라인과 시몬스는 지적평등의 경험이 이루어질 수 있는 공간으로서 학교 공간의 가능성을 제시한다. 특히 학교의 고유한 특징으로서 마스켈라인과 시몬스는 학교의 자유시간 속에서 가정과 사회의 부담에서 유예된 학생이 생산의 세계에서 풀려난 교육내용을 마주하여 새로운 세계를 실험하고 시도해 보게 된다고 분석한다. 본 연구는 평등에 기초한 교사-학생의 관계는 의지와 의지로 엮인 관계로서 교사의 사랑과 권위가 학생의 지적해방에 관여하면서 동시에 이러한 관여가 교사-학생의 평등한 관계를 훼손하지 않음을 논구한다. 마지막으로 학교와 사회의 관계를 경계에선 사유의 차원으로 제시한다.

There have been multiple critiques from society claiming that the school system should be normalized or reformed. Masschelein and Simons (2013) attempt to respond to this phenomenon in the form of defence of the school. This article focuses on the matters around student-teacher relations based on the equality of the school in Masschelein and Simons. Following Rancière’s idea of equality, Masschelein and Simons find the meaning of schooling and its possibility in the practice of equality. They argue that equality is not something to be realized in the future through education, but something to be practiced in the present between intellectual equals. In relation to this, school is understood as a place for students to practice equality while bracketing their burdens from the family and society, and to explore educational subjects as a new world. In line with this point, this article examines how teachers connect with students who explore intellectual emancipation. This requires no explication, but order from the teacher as the relation interwoven with will to will. I argue that order and authority based on teachers’ love do not jeopardize the equal relationship between the two agents. Finally, this study explores the relationship between schools and society by discussing what it means to have a school at the margin of society.
