Profiling lexical bundles and text mining of syntax corpus for secondary English teacher appointment exam preparers

This study was devoted to generating an inventory of pedagogically supportive and the most frequent lexical bundles as well as to performing text mining in the domain of syntax. To this end, a corpus, representing most popularly used syntax textbooks for English education majors, served as a database for lexical bundle analysis. After being retrieved and compiled into a specialized English syntax corpus, four-word lexical bundles were extracted with AntConc 3.5.8 for a structural and functional analysis. The analysis revealed that the ratio of NP/PP structures (70%) was more than twice as high as that of VP structures (30%). In addition, text-mining was performed with KH Coder to scrutinize a co-occurrence network of words and to extract the frequency of parts of speech within the syntax corpus. A list of extracted words classified into the parts of speech and co-occurrence network graphs were generated. The generation of top-frequency lexical bundles along with co-occurrence networks and word frequency charts could be supportive for academic neophytes and secondary English teacher appointment exam (SETAE) preparers in studying syntax.
