The main aim of this paper is to analyze English language teaching materials evaluation checklists designed by pre-service teachers in Korea. The data were obtained from 129 student-teachers who had been trained as secondary school English teachers. They submitted their own checklists for the evaluation of secondary-school level English textbooks. The results of the analysis reveal that the average number of the evaluation criteria were 36.8. Among the criteria being evaluated, the participants stressed the importance of task activities, age and level of their target learners, and content among the criteria. Half preferred a response system that allows the importance of a particular teaching context. The findings suggest that for the betterment of training, teacher-trainers need to understand pre-service teachers’ perspectives and preferences related to criteria and response system in materials evaluation checklists.
