VP Ellipsis Always Precedes Reprise Fragment Ellipsis

  • 4

The timing of ellipsis has been widely studied by many researchers. In spite of debates on this issue from a wide range of perspectives, they have focused less on the possibility that ellipsis phenomena differ in their timing. In this paper, I argue that even though VP ellipsis and reprise fragment ellipsis are similar in that they involve phonological deletion, they are strictly ordered. This will be shown through the inflectional facts these two ellipsis phenomena exhibit. Given this, I argue that this might imply that VP ellipsis occurs during the course of derivation, while ellipsis generating reprise fragments does so at PF, under the assumption that it is at morphology that inflection occurs.
