The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of phrasal verbs ‘down’ from 10 copies of high school English textbooks based on Park(2012) and Collins COBUILD Dictionary of Phrasal verbs. Modern English education has focused on communication-oriented education. Focusing on communication-oriented education. The high school English textbooks must pay attention to English fluency and accuracy with containing the various meaning of phrasal verbs. It is not only spoken English but also written English. English becomes a means of communication in present time. Using phrasal verbs are increasing not only in informal sentences but also in informal sentences. However Korean English learners still struggle with the meaning and practical use of the phrasal verbs. Even tend to avoid using of phrasal verbs. To have a wide scope of usage of phrasal verbs in context, the collection of data are 10 books of high school English textbooks. The procedure is to collect particle ‘down’ within the sentences in textbook context. Phrasal verbs are highly productive, and they can create various meanings by combining verbs with particle ‘down’. To analysis of collected data based on Park, the Hangle program is used. The result shows the meaning of particle ‘down’ in the context with core meanings of its particle and another meanings of particle ‘down’ can be expanded in another context not many ways. In conclusion, to learn the various meaning of phrasal verbs effectively, it is necessary to realize the core meaning and its individual meaning of expansion in context. So high school textbooks should be contain more various phrasal verbs for various input.
