일본 대학의 후기교양교육 실태조사 연구

A Study on Actual Situations of ‘The Late Generalization’ in Japanese Universities: Focused on Cases of the University of Tokyo

인공지능의 4차 산업혁명 시대가 가져올 급격한 사회적 변화가 예상되는 가운데 대학의 위기론이 대두되고 있다. 미래사회를 대비하기 위한 대학교육의 변화와 개혁이 요구됨에 따라 최근 일본의 대학에서 교양교육을 중심으로 교육체계를 개편하는 시도가 있어 대학 교양교육의 중요성이 새롭게 조명되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 도쿄대학이 실천하고 있는 교양교육 중심의 교육과정을 조사하여 분석 고찰하였다. 도쿄대학의 교양교육 모델인 ‘후기 교양교육’ 과정을 추진하게 된 배경과 커리큘럼 및 이수 과정을 조사하여 보고하고자 한다. 도쿄대학은 급변하는 시대적 변화에 따른 세계적 문제 해결을 위한 인재 육성을 목표로 리버럴 아츠⋅ 교육 이념을 기반으로 한 교양교육 중심의 개혁을 주도하여 교양학부를 강화해 가고 있다. 특히, 후기교양 교육의 실천을 통해 대학의 교양교육이 1, 2학년의 저학년에 끝나는 것이 아닌 학제적인 사고력 향상을 위해 학부 고학년인 3, 4학년 및 대학원 과정에서 교양교육의 필요성을 강조하고 있으며, 교양교육과 전공교육과의 유기적인 통합 방식을 실시함으로써 새로운 교양교육의 모델을 제시하고 있다. 이러한 일본 대학의 교양교육 중시와 고학년 교양교육의 사례는 우리나라 대학교육에 시사하는 바가 크다고 할 수 있다. 문리⋅이과를 횡단하는 유기적인 융복합의 교육 프로그램들을 참고하여 우리나라 대학의 교양교육의 문제점들을 파악하고 질적 제고를 위한 후기교양교육(고학년 교양교육)의 가능성을 제안하고자 한다.

In the midst of the tremendous social changes brought about by the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution as well as that of A.I. (Artifical Intelligence), a crisis in theory is now emerging within universities. As seen by the changes and reforms undertaken in education by universities to prepare their students for the future society, there have been attempts to reorganize the education system, especially within the liberal arts. Moreover, the importance of the general education at universities is receiving new attention. In this study, I will analyze and contemplate the liberal arts oriented curriculum found at the University of Tokyo. The background of the introduction of ‘The Late Generalizaton’ curriculum and its completion course will be investigated and reported on. The University of Tokyo made the liberal arts oriented education take a lead role in its reforms based on the liberal arts ideology and has been reinforcing its general education faculty to meet its goal of raising talented people to solve global issues in a rapidly changing world. In particular, by practicing ‘The Late Generalization’ not just for entry level students, but also for second, third and fourth year students, (and in fact even for graduate course students), the needs for liberal arts education to develop an inter-disciplinary way of thinking is being emphasized more and more. Also, by implementing an organic integration of liberal arts and major subjects, a new model of liberal arts education is being suggested. With such emphases being placed on liberal arts education in Japanese universities, even in the case of higher level students, liberal education has considerable implications for Korean university education. Referring to organic fusion education, which crosses the liberal arts with the natural sciences, I will attempt to identify issues on liberal arts education in Korean universities, and will also try to suggest the possibility of The Late Generalization (high level liberal arts education) for qualitative improvements of our liberal arts education.
