[일반론문] 고서의 배접지에서 찾은 자료 몇 가지

Some Discoveries Made on the Attached Papers of Old Books

책의 표지는 본문을 보호하는 기능을 갖고 있으므로, 고서의 표지도 본문보다 두껍고 질긴 종이를 사용할 뿐 아니라, 여기에 다른 종이를 덧붙여 상당히 튼튼하게 만든다. 고서 가운데는 표지만이 아니라 본문에도 다른 종이를 붙여놓은 책도 있는데, 이는 사전처럼 자주 보는 책의 본문이 쉽게 파손되지 않도록 책의 소유자가 배접한 것이다. 배접지로 쓰인 종이는 당시에는 쓸모없는 것이었지만, 100년 이상의 시간이 흐른 지금에 와서는 과거를 이해하는 데 도움을 주기도 한다. 필자는 이 글에서 고서의 배접지에 흥미 있는 내용이 들어 있는 자료 몇 가지를 소개했다. 첫째는 1860년 중국 청나라에 사신으로 다녀온 인물이 쓴 일기의 초고이다. 이것을 현재 남아 있는 정식 보고서와 비교해서 몇 가지 의미 있는 내용을 확인했다. 둘째는 1903년 무렵의 대한 제국 군대 문서이다. 보고서와 일지 등으로 당시 군대의 일상을 알 수 있는 자료이다. 셋째는 방각본 한글소설로, 이제까지 알려지지 않은 자료이다. 연구자들이 고서를 볼 때, 본문 이외의 다른 부분도 잘 살펴본다면 의외의 자료를 얻을 수 있을 것이다.

Since the primary purpose of a book’s cover is to protect the text, it is made of thicker and more resilient type of paper than the rest of the book. In addition, the covers of some old books have been found to be reinforced with additional pieces of paper, attached by their owners to further protect them from damage. Th e attached papers were obviously regarded as disposable at the time, but now that over a hundred years have passed since their usage, they can provide insights into the past. In this article, I present a number of interesting materials found on the attached papers of old books. Th e fi rst is a draft from a diary written by a man who went to Qing dynasty China as an envoy in 1860. A few signifi cant matters are revealed when its content is compared with that of the offi cial report of the mission that is extant. Th e second is a military document from the era of the Empire of Korea, from around 1903. Th e third is from a previously unknown commercial novel. For researchers many such discoveries of interest could be made if they look at parts of old books beyond its main text.
