[일반론문] 이청원이 남긴 검열ㆍ전향ㆍ숙청의 흔적

Censorship, Conversion, Purge of Marxist Historian Lee Cheong-won

이청원은 식민지 조선과 초기 북한에서 활약한 사회주의 활동가이자 마르크스주의 역사학자이다. 이 글에서는 이청원의 대표적인 저작을 소개하고 그 주변에서 확인되는 검열, 전향, 숙청의 흔적을 살펴보고자 한다. 1936년에 『조선사회사독본』은 부분 삭제 처분을 받았다. 일본 경찰 자료와 『조선사회사독본』에 대한 실물 조사를 통해 식민지 시기 검열의 실태를 확인할 수 있다. 1937년에는 근대사 부분을 더해 『조선역사독본』을 간행했다. 1940년에 체포되어 재판에 부쳐진 이청원은 같은 해 전향서를 제출했다. 여기서는 일본 관헌 보고서에 담긴 이청원의 전향서에 대한 분석을 소개한다. 북한 정권에 참여한 이청원은 1947년 조선역사편찬위원회 위원장을 맡았다. 같은 해 펴낸 『조선근대사연구』는 러, 중, 일 등 5개 국어로 번역되어 초기 북한 역사학을 대표하는 성과로 평가되었다. 1955년 펴낸 『조선에 있어서 프로레타리아트의 헤게모니를 위한 투쟁』에 드러난 민족 부르주아지 인식이 숙청의 빌미가 된다. 1958년에 과학원 역사연구소가 낸 『삼국 시기의 사회 경제 구성에 관한 토론집』은 이청원의 이름을 종이를 덧대어 가린 채 보급되었다.

Lee Cheong-won was a socialist activist and Marxist historian who was active in colonial Korea and early North Korea. In this article, I would like to introduce Lee Cheong-won’s representative works and examine the traces of censorship, conversion, and purge found around him. In 1936, the Reading Book of the Korean Social History was partially deleted. The actual inspection of the Reading Book of the Korean Social History and the Japanese police data, could confirm the current state of censorship during the colonial period. Lee Cheong-won, who was arrested in 1940 and put on trial, submitted a conversion form the same year. Here, I introduce an analysis of Lee’s conversion document contained in the Japanese government report. Lee Cheong-won, who participated in the North Korean regime, chaired the Korean History Compilation Committee in 1947. The Modern History of Korea, published in the same year, was translated into five languages including Russia, China, and Japan, and was evaluated as a representative achievement of early North Korean historiography. The perception of the national bourgeoisie revealed in the 1955 Struggle for the Proletarian Hegemony in Korea served as an excuse for the purge. In 1958, the Discussion Collection on the Social Economic Formation of the Three Kingdoms Period was published by the Institute of History, covering the name of Lee Cheong-won with paper.
