To investigate relative flammability in flaming combution among 15 softwoods, 24 hardwoods, 5 tropical woods and 3 wood-based materials, oxygen indices were determined through Up and Down method following oxygen index test of ASTM D 2863-77. Oxygen index ranged from 27.6 for Quecus aculissima to 20.7 for Poplus davidiana in hardwoods, from 28.2 for Larix gmelim var. rincipis-ruprechti to 21.0 for Pinus strobus in softwoods and from 27.3 for Diplerocapus grandiflorus to 22.3 for Alhizia falcalaria in tropical woods. Judging from the fact that highly flammable materials are likely to have a low oxygen index, Quercus acutissima in hardwoods, Larix gmelini var. rincipis-ruprechlii in softwoods and Diplerocarpus grandiflorus in tropical woods appear to be ranked first inflammability but poplus davidiana in hardwoods, Pinus strobus in softwoods and Albizia falcalaria in tropical woods appear to be the least in fire resistance. Particleboard have higher oxygen index than that of other wood-based materials and a lot of wood species.
