This study was carried out to evaluate the strength properties of each element affecting the strength of box-type wooden furniture and to provide basic data for the whole strength analysis of fabricated furniture. The factors affecting the strength properties of box-type wooden furniture include strength proper ties of framing joints and joints between framing and back-covering, and inplane shear strength of back covering materials. Mechanical properties of the fasteners used to construct vertical joints between framing members were in the order of dowel> screw> nail. In joints between framing and back-covering, stapIe showed higher strength than nail as fasteners, and, it was very effective in the sense of strength to use staple parallel to loading direction. lnplane shear strength of MDF was higher than that of plywood. It was expected that the resisting strength of a box-type furniture against lateral loads depends primarily on the strength of joints between framing and back-covering,
