A Historical Study of Chair Design from the 19th Century to the Present Time in the Western Countries

This study aims to find historical background through the literature review upon the chairs, which had been popular during each era, from the 19th century to the present. The 19th century in chair design is characterized as a transitional period to modern design, Meanwhile in the 20th century the distintive fea tures of chair design might be charaterized by rationalism, funtionalism, and mass production for common peaple. Modern chairs were made of various new materials including plastics, rubber, metal. glass fiber, and etc. Another distinctive feature of the modern chairs is that most of the famous chairs were made by the compentent architencts rather than the crafsman before The modern chair designers must get ideas from past designs on the basis of understanding of their historical background.
