In this paper, the fundamental properties of five seal materials such as jujube tree. box tree. ebony. water buffalo horn. ivory. were investigated. The following were examined. 1) Physical properties, i.e.. the specific gravity in air dry. hygroscopic properties, shrinkage, wettability. 2) Mechanical properties, i.e., compression strength parallel to grain. cross section hardness. and abraslon property. The experimental results are summarized in Figs. 1-6 and Tables 1-7. Swel1ing and shrinkage anisotropy in cross section of ivory and water buffalo horn were very stable in hygroscopic properties. Contact angle of water and seal liquid in a box tree was smallest among materials. Mechanical properties of an ivory was very strong than any others. A jujube tree was very durable seal material in abrasion test and hardness test. In general. an ivory among al1 tested materials was estimated excel lent sea! material. but wood materials with a sense of colour and texture is excellent seal material. too. Therefore it will be necessary to study for improving the utility value of wood in order to develope the new seal materials.
