To develop a plastic board of emitting low volatile organic compounds(VOCs) and adsorbing formaldehyde, bamboo charcoal-plastic(BCP) composite boards were made by an extruder using bamboo charcoal with high adsorption capacity. Physical properties such as moisture content, specific gravity and water adsorption were a little higher than original plastic one as the addition amount of bamboo charcoal was increased, Mechanical properties of the BCP composite boards were not decreased and also mechanical anisotropy according to both direction of the board was not found by the addition of bamboo charcoal. When bamboo charcoal was mixed in manufacturing plastic board, there were no detectable peaks arising from polypropylene(PP) with low melting point, wax. Bamboo charcoal also gave the plastic board an adsorption capacity of formaldehyde. These results suggested that the addition of bamboo charcoal was very effective for diminishing the VOCs from plastic board and adsorbing formaldehyde from wood-based panels like particleboard.
