연령에 따른 비전통적 대학생의 특성 및 학습참여 양상

Characteristics and Student Engagement of Non-traditional College Students

본 연구는 비전통적 학습자로서 만 26세 이상의 고연령 대학생이 전통적 대학생(만 25세 이하)과 비교하여 상대적으로 어떤 특성을 지니고 있으며 학습참여의 양상은 어떠한지를 실증적으로 탐색하고자 수행되었다. 연구 대상은 전국 84개 대학에 재학 중인 30,143명의 학생이다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 비전통적 대학생은 전통적 대학생에 비해 개인 배경 및 입학 전 특성, 대학생활 관련 특성, 진로 관련 특성 등 대부분의 변수에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 둘째, 비전통적 대학생의 학습참여 양상을 살펴본 결과, 학업 도전 영역에서는 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았으나, 동료 및 교수와의 상호작용과 인간관계에 대한 만족도, 대학의 지원적 환경에 대한 인식에서는 유의한 차이가 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 연령에 따른 비전통적 대학생 집단이 우리나라 대학에서 여전히 상대적 비주류 집단으로 존재하며, 사회적 통합을 경험하고 있지 못하고 있음을 논의하고, 정책적 시사점을 제시하였다.

This study was conducted to empirically explore the characteristics and student engagement of non-traditional college students who are 26 years of age or older compared to traditional university students (under 25 years of age). Samples included 30,143 students from 84 four-year colleges. Results showed that non-traditional college students compared to traditional students had statistically significant differences in personal background, pre-college characteristics, college life and career-related variables. According to student engagement pattern, there were no significant differences in the academic challenge, but it was confirmed that there were significant differences in their interactions with peers and professors, satisfaction with human relations, and recognition of the supportive college environment. Based on these results, it was discussed that the non-traditional college students by age still exist as a non-mainstream group in Korean college, and they have a difficulty in social integration. Policy implication were suggested.
