만우 송창근(晩雨 宋昌根, 1898-1950)의 ‘민족’ 담론 연구

A Study on Rev. Song, Chang Keun’s Nation Discourse: Focusing on <The Christian Messenger> from 1919 to 1928

본 논문의 목적은 자국 우선주의의 포스트 코로나 시대에서 ‘민족’이 나아가야 할 지향점을 제시하는 데 있다. 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 일제강점기 기독교 민족주의자 만우 송창근(晩雨 宋昌根, 1898-1950)이 〈기독신보〉에 남긴 글을 미시사(Microhistory)적 방법을 통해 ‘민족’ 담론을 분석했다. 〈기독신보〉는 일제강점기 교회와 일반 사회, 국내는 물론 해외 동포들에게까지 주요 소식을 전한 언론지였다. 동시에 항일 민족주의 언론으로서 문화적 민족운동을 펼친 민족 언론지였다. 〈기독신보〉에 나타난 송창근의 민족 담론에는 첫째 민족의식과 기독교 신앙의 합류를 통해 그것이 ‘어떻게’ 구체화되었는지, 둘째 그의 민족 담론은 어떤 문제의식에서 기인(基因)한 것인지, 셋째 송창근이 이루고자 한 민족의 모습은 어떠했으며, ‘어떤’ 방법을 통해 실현하려 했는지를 본 논문을 통해 밝힐 수 있었다. 이를 통해 일제강점기 한 목회자의 민족에 대한 생각을 엿볼 수 있었으며, 그의 생애와 사상을 관통하는 전체적 민족 개념에 보다 구체적으로 접근할 수 있었다. 이러한 연구 성과를 토대로 본 연구자는 오늘의 시대가 추구해야 할 민족주의의 방향을 기독교 민족주의의 현대적 해석을 통해 제언했다.

The purpose of the thesis is to propose the direction for people during time of ultra-nationalistic post-corona era. To accomplish the purpose of the study, I have analyzed in the <The Christian Messenger> written by Rev. Song, Chang Keun (1898-1950) as an example of nationalist discourse. Song was a christian nationalist who lived during the Japanese colonial era. This study deploys a micro-history research method. <The Christian Messenger> was a periodical that passed out important news to churches and societies during the Japanese colonial era. It was not just for those living in Korea but also for those living overseas. At the same time, it also supported a nationalist anti-Japanese movement. Examining Rev. Song, Chang Keun’s national discourse in <The Christian Messenger> with a micro-history approach, we were able to find out how he was able to construct nationalist discourse by joining his national awareness and his Christian faith. We also revealed his critical approach to nationalist discourse, what kind of nation he wanted to attain, and what ways he used to fulfill his goals. This paper peers into the mind of a pastor during Japanese colonial era and allows us a glimpse of his thoughts on nationalism. Based on this research, I propose a direction for today’s nationalism and provide an analysis of current Protestant nationalism.
