Classics of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts Classes in University: Focusing on the Case of Dongguk University’s <GreatBooks Seminar on Economy and Society>

이 글은 동국대학교 <경제와사회명작세미나>의 실제 운영 사례(2021년 1학기)를 살펴보면서 그 성과와 개선 과제를 확인하기 위한 시도이다. 일반적으로 명작세미나는창의·융합 능력과 소통·협력 능력을 향상시키는데 효과적이다. <경제와사회명작세미나>는 사회과학 분야 고전 혹은 명작을 대상으로 진행된다는 점에서, 이러한 명작세미나 일반의 장점 외에 근대성을 파악하기 위한 안목과 통찰력을 제공한다는 장점까지 지닌다. 이러한 교과목을 조별 발표와 토론 중심으로 운영했는데, 학생들의 강의평가에 비추어 보면 이러한 장점을 충분히 발휘하지 못한 것으로 나타났다. 많은 학생들이 근대사회의 역사적 특징을 이해하는 데에는 많은 도움을 받았다고 평가했지만, 창의·융합 능력이나 소통·협력 능력을 함양하는 데 도움을 받았다고 평가한 학생은 거의 없으며, 일부 학생은 조별 활동에 대한 불만을 강하게 드러내기까지 했다. 이는 곧 <경제와사회명작세미나> 교과목이 근대 사회의 특징을 이해할 수 있는 안목이나 통찰력을 함양하는 데서 그치지 않고, 창의·융합 능력, 소통·협력 능력 등을함양하기 위한 방안의 확보를 과제로 떠안고 있음을 시사한다. 물론 창의·융합 능력이나 소통·협력 능력은 1학기 수업으로 쉽게 향상되는 것이 아니므로, 학생들이 강의평가에서 이러한 능력의 향상 여부에 대해 언급하기가 쉽지 않을 수도 있다. 그렇다고 해도 근대성을 이해할 수 있는 안목을 향상시키는 것만큼이나 장기적으로 창의·융합 능력이나 소통·협력 능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 방안을 확보하기 위해 노력할 필요가 있다는 점이 부인될 수는 없을 것이다.

This article is an attempt to confirm the performance and improvement tasks of Dongguk University’s <GreatBooks Seminar on Economy and Society>(<GBSES>) by examining the actual operation case of it(the first semester of 2021). In general, Great Books Seminar(GBS) is effective in improving creativity and convergence skills(CCS1) and communication and collaboration skills(CCS2). <GBSES> is held for classics or Great Books in the field of social science and has the advantage of providing the insight to grasp modernity in addition to the merits of GBS in general. Class was centered on group presentations and discussions, but in light of the students’ lecture evaluations, it was found that It was found that these advantages were not fully exhibited. Although many students evaluated that they received a lot of help in understanding the historical characteristics of modern society, few evaluated that they received help in cultivating CCS1 and CCS2, and some students were dissatisfied with the group activity. This means that <GBSES> course does not stop at cultivating an eye or insight to understand the characteristics of modern society, but also have a task of securing ways to enhance CCS1 and CCS2. Of course, It is not easy of CCS1 and CCS2 to improve with just one semester class, and it may not be easy for students to comment on whether these skills are improved in lecture evaluations. Even so, it cannot be denied that it is necessary to make an effort to secure a way to improve CCS1 or CCS2 in the long term as much as improving the eye to understand modernity.
