<장인걸전>의 서사 전략과 ‘인격’ 영웅의 부상

Jang-in-gul Jeon’s Unexpected Story Development and Distinctive Casting of an Imperfect but High-Minded Hero

<장인걸전>의 등장인물들이 일으키는 다종다양한 사건들은 익숙하면서도 낯설다. 기존 소설의 관습이나 정형(定型)에서 벗어나려는 일탈(逸脫)의 지향으로 인해 장인걸은 기존의 영웅들과는 다른 행보와 특징을 보인다. 본고는 일탈적 서사 전개 양상과 독보적으로 주조된 ‘인격 영웅’의 형상을 <장인걸전>의 서사 전략으로 파악했다. 장인걸은 작품 내에서 영웅으로 불리고 그에 걸맞은 공훈을 세우기도 하지만, 이력이나 성격 면에서 기존의 영웅들과는 다른 면모를 보인다. 급제 후 성공가도를 달리는 여타 영웅의 행보와도 거리가 있으며, 열쇠에 빙의된 이연쇠의 지시에 의존하여 문제를 해결하고 타인의 인정을 받기 시작한다는 점에서 능력 발휘의 방식도 남다르다. 그러나 불완전하고 우직하고 순진한 면모는 인간적인 매력이 되어 타인을 그의주변으로 끌어들였으며, 뛰어난 공감력과 포용력, 의기로운 성품은 타인의 신뢰와 호감을 얻어낼 수 있었다. 장인걸에게는 우직하고 순진하며 불완전한 면모가 보이기도 했지만, 포용적이고자비로우며 의리 있는 인품으로 주변 사람들을 감화시키거나 연대를 형성할 수 있었다. 무력이나 지략이 아닌 인격이 부각되는 새로운 영웅상을 형상화했다는 점에서<장인걸전>의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

Jang-in-gul Jeon has a familiar but uncustomary story because it of its tendency to avoid the planned situations that can be found in old novels, but at the same time, introduces a new heroic character who is imperfect but high-minded. In this study, this can be referred to as “unexpected” story development and “high-minded” heroic character. Jang-in-gul, the main character, seems weak and inefficient. However, he is more than this. He is not a hero who is either honorable or well favored, as is common in Old Hero Novels. His adversities began after he passed the civil service exam, unlike other heroes. He was himself nearly murdered after losing all his property through bribes and sensual pleasures, but he had a miraculous escape because the poison intended for him did not dissolve in alcohol. Though he had both literary and military accomplishments, strictly speaking, his early success was the result of his supernatural servant Leeyeonshoi. He must, however, be judged a good person demonstrating tolerance and benevolence, and it is in this way that he became a real hero, as it allowed him to gather people to help him. We should thus call him a high-minded hero. Jang-in-gul Jeon is a good example of weaving a different story and creating a new heroic character out of the late Chosun Old Novel after the late 19th century.
