노라치 설화의 민족이야기로서의 특징과 각편 간의 쟁점

Characteristics of the Norachi Tale as a National Story and the Issues between Each Version

20세기 전후에 한국에서 채록된 노라치 설화는 수달과 조선 여인이 결합하여 노라치가 탄생하고, 노라치가 낳은 자식 누르하치가 청나라를 건국한다는 줄거리를 갖는다. 중국의 송태조(宋太祖) 설화와 월남의 정부령(丁部領) 설화도 수달과 여인이 낳은자식이 천자가 된다는 줄거리를 지닌, 노라치 설화의 유사 설화이다. 노라치 설화가송태조 설화 및 정부령 설화에 비해 지니는 특징은 민족 간의 갈등이 두드러진다는점이다. 송태조·정부령 설화에서 수달은 그냥 짐승일 뿐이지만 노라치 설화에서의 그것은 분명하게 여진족을 표상한다. 이에 따라 이야기 속의 명당 내기가 송태조 설화에서는 동족 간에 이뤄지고, 정부령 설화에서는 이민족 간에 이뤄지는 것으로 암시될뿐이지만, 노라치 설화에서는 조선인과 여진인의 대결로 드러난다. 또 천자의 위(位) 를 놓고 벌이는 대결이 송태조 설화에는 없고, 정부령 설화에서는 정부령과 삼촌 사이에 일어나지만 노라치 설화에서는 여진인 누르하치와 조선인 정충신 간에 이뤄진다. 이러한 민족 간의 대결 국면에서 노라치 설화 각편에 다채로운 변이가 나타나는바, 그러한 변이는 여진에 대한 응징·관용, 여진인에 대한 조선인의 우·열, 청나라 건국에 조선인이 행사한 영향력의 대·소의 극단 사이에서 유동하고 있다. 이는 노라치설화가 조선인과 여진인의 민족 문제에 관한 향유자들의 활발한 토론장이 되었음을의미한다.

The Norachi (노라치) tale, recorded in Korea around the 20th century, has a storyline in which an otter and a Joseon woman combine to create Norachi, and Nurhachi (努爾哈赤), a son of Norachi, later establishes the Qing (淸) Dynasty. The story of Song Tai-Jo (宋太祖) in China and of Jung Bu-lyeong (丁部領) in Vietnam are tales similar to the Norachi tale that involve a plot in which the child of an otter and a woman becomes emperor. A distinctive feature of the Norachi tale compared to the other two tales is that the conflict between ethnic groups is prominent. In the confrontation between ethnic groups, there is variation in each of the Norachi tales between the extremes of punishment or tolerance for the Jurchen (女 眞), the superiority or inferiority of Koreans vis-à-vis the Jurchen, and the extent to which Koreans influenced the founding of the Qing Dynasty. Hence, the Norachi tale has become a lively topic for the discussion of ethnic issues of Korean (朝鮮人) and Jurchen.
