The Effects of Digital Scaffolding on Reading Comprehension

읽기 이해가 부진하면 학교 안팎에서 여러 가지 어려움을 겪는다. 읽기 이해가 부진한 학생이 겪는 어려움을 돕기 위해서는 여러 가지 지원이 필요하다. 본 연구의 목적은 청소년이 학습 읽기 맥락에서 여러 가지 비계를 제공하는 디지털 텍스트를 읽을때, 비계 활용에 따라 읽기 이해에 차이가 생기는지, 즉, 디지털 비계 활용이 청소년독자의 읽기 이해에 미치는 영향을 알아보는 것이다. 이를 위해 연구 대상에게 네 종류의 비계를 제공하는 디지털 텍스트를 읽고 학습하는 과제를 수행하도록 하였다. 학습을 마친 후 읽기 이해 검사와 디지털 비계 활용에 관한 설문에 응답하도록 하였다. 청소년 독자는 디지털 텍스트 활용 학습에 비교적 능숙하며 디지털 텍스트에 포함된여러 가지 기술 요소를 활용하는 수준도 비교적 높았다. 읽기 이해는 정보 도표 활용수준 그리고 강조표현 유용성 인식 수준과 미약하지만, 통계적으로 유의미한 상관이있음이 드러났다. 디지털 텍스트가 제공하는 여러 기술 요소가 스스로 학습에 긍정적/부정적 영향을 미치지는 못한다. 어떤 방식으로 활용해야 학습 지원 목적을 달성할 수 있는지, 특히, 학습자가 자기 역량을 넘어서는 과업을 수행할 수 있도록 돕는 비계 역할을 담당할 수 있는지 추후 연구가 이루어져야 한다.

Readers who experience comprehension problems face multiple challenges in and out of school and need a variety of resources to help them. In this study, I examined whether adolescents’ reading comprehension is affected when they read a digital text that provides various scaffoldings. Specifically, it seeks to determine whether digital scaffoldings enhance an adolescent’s ability to comprehend a text. To this end, all the participants were required to read and learn a digital text containing four types of scaffolds. After completing the reading task, they responded to a reading comprehension test and a questionnaire on the use of digital scaffolding. The respondents were fairly adept at learning from digital text and took advantage of its technical elements. The results showed a weak but statistically significant relationship among their reading comprehension level, the frequency of their use of interactive informational charts, and their perceived helpfulness of the technical elements for emphasis. Technical elements of digital text thus do not have a single positive/negative effect on learning. Nevertheless, there is a need for more research on how digital texts may be used to support learning, particularly by playing a scaffolding role in helping adolescents perform reading tasks beyond their capabilities
