A Study of the Representation of Old Age and Storytelling in the Webtoon “Welcome to Silver Life”

노인혐오는 노년을 부정적인 방식으로 이해하는 사회문화적으로 구성된 노년 담론의 영향 속에서 자라난다. 이러한 노년 담론 형성에는 대중적인 미디어의 역할이 상당하다. 이 글은 특히, 노년 세대와 젊은 세대의 갈등이 극심해지고 있는 현실을 의식하여 젊은 세대가 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 웹툰에 주목하였다. 일상툰 <웰캄 투 실버라이프>는 작가가 꾸며낸 가상의 이야기가 아니라 실제 현실에 있는 노년의 삶을 재현한다는 점에서 흥미로운 텍스트이다. 이 웹툰은 일상툰의이점을 적극적으로 활용하는 동시에 전형적인 일상툰의 문법을 변용함으로써 노년의자아와 나이 듦의 의미를 재사유하는 관점을 보여준다. <웰캄 투 실버라이프>는 기존의 노년 담론을 비판적으로 재현하고 노년의 삶을 재조명하는 대안 담론을 구성한다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

Gerontophobia grows under the influence of socially and culturally constructed discourse on old age in which it is portrayed negatively. The popular media play a significant role in forming such discourse. This article particularly focuses on webtoons that the younger generation can easily access while recognizing the fact that the conflict between the older and younger generation is deteriorating. The dailytoon “Welcome to Silver Life” is interesting in that it reproduces the life of old age in real life, instead of being a fictional story created by the author. This webtoon shows the perspective of rethinking the old self and the meaning of aging by actively utilizing the advantages of the medium while transforming the typical format of dailytoons. Therefore, “Welcome to Silver Life” is significant by critically reproducing the existing discourse on old age and constructing an alternative discourse that re-examines old age.
