최병헌(崔炳憲) 목사의 ‘이중적(二重的) 생명의 관점’ 소고

A Study on Rev. Byeong-Heon Choi’s ‘View of Double Life’: Focused on His “Judgment of Life and Death”(1921)

이 연구의 목적은 최병헌 목사의 “生死一判”(1921)을 통해 ‘이중적 생명의 관점’에 대한 그의 담론을 고찰하려는 데 있다. 그는 로마서 8장 5절과 6절을 본문으로 설정하여 이 글을 작성했다. “육신을 따르는 자는 육신의 일을, 영을 따르는 자는 영의 일을 생각하나니 육신의 생각은 사망이요 영의 생각은 생명과 평안이니라” 최병헌의 이중적 생명의 관점에 관한 중요한 논점은 그의 옥고 “生死一判”을 통하여 살펴볼 수 있으며 이 글은 1921년에 간행된 『百牧講演(第一集)』에 수록되어 있다. 본 연구자는 최병헌의 설교문 “生死一判”에 드러난 핵심적인 논점들을 다음과 같이 숙고했다. 첫째, 그의 인간관과 관련하여 하나님의 백성과 사탄의 종들, 천국과 지옥, 신자와 불신자 간의 영적 교제 단절 등 삼중적 불연속성을 설명했다. 둘째, 이분법적 생명이해에 대한 삼중적 의미에 초점을 맞추었으며 이와 관련된 의미심장한 논점들로서 ‘삶과 죽음’, ‘영원한 죽음’, ‘영원한 생명’ 등을 제시했다. 셋째, 최병헌의 신앙고백에 기초하여 한국기독교인들에게 부탁한 간절한 호소를 살폈다. 그는 한국기독교인들에게 가치 있는 인생을 개척할 것과 예수 그리스도 안에서 중생의 삶을 추구할 것을 촉구했다. 앞으로 본 논문의 외연 차원에서 최병헌 목사의 ‘기독교 변증론’, ‘삼위일체 인식’, ‘종말관’, ‘그리스도인의 성화’, ‘그리스도인의 실천적 윤리’ 등과 같은 다양한 주제들이 연구되기를 기대한다.

This study aims to analyze Rev. Byeong-Heon Choi’s view of double life in his “Judgment of Life and Death”(1921). This text is based on Romans 8:5-6. “Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;” Choi’s important view of double Life is based on his esteemed manuscript “Judgment of Life and Death” published in Sermons by One Hundred Pastors & Teachers. Vol. 1(1921). I considered the important points revealed in Choi’s sermon “Judgment of Life and Death” as follows: Firstly, I tried to explain Choi’s idea of triple discontinuity such as God’s people and Satan’s servants, heaven and hell, discontinuity of spiritual companionship between Christian and non-Christian, and so forth. Secondly, I concentrated on significant points for understanding of double life based on triple meaning such as ‘life and death’, ‘eternal death’, ‘eternal life’, and so on. Thirdly, on the basis of Choi’s confession, I attempted to study his impassioned appeal to Korean Christians. He urged Korean Christians to navigate valuable life and to pursue the life of regeneration in Jesus Christ. I am looking forward to future extensions of this research into Rev. Byeong-Heon Choi’s other thoughts such as ‘apologetics of christianity’, ‘perception of trinity’, ‘viewpoint of eschatology’, ‘Christian sanctification’, ‘Christian practical ethics’, and so forth.
