천국에서의 영광을 바라보며

Seeking Heavenly Glory: Vainglory and Almsgiving in John Chrysostom’s Thought

초대교회 그리스도인들은 예수를 따르는 제자의 삶에서 헛된 영광(κενοδοξία)이 큰 장애가 된다고 인식하였다. 4세기 동방교부 요한 크리소스톰 역시 자주 헛된 영광의 위험성에 대해 경고하였다. 본 논문은 헛된 영광을 위한 구제행위에 대한 요한의 경고를 상세히 분석할 것이다. 이는 구제의 동기에 관한 문제로 요한은 이 죄가 선행에 미치는 부정적인 영향과 극복방안을 여러 설교에서 가르친다. 특히 이 문제는 미래에 하나님이 주실 보상과 깊은 관련이 있다. 이러한 요한의 담론을 당시 사회의 중요한 경제구조인 후원제도의 배경 속에서 살펴보고자 한다. 요한은 헛된 영광을 추구하는 것은 큰 손실을 초래하게 될 것이라고 경고한다. 구제는 우리에게 큰 유익을 주는데 명예를 위한 구제는 하늘에 쌓인 보상을 없앤다. 요한은 헛된 영광을 극복하기 위해서 구제의 최고의 교사인 하나님의 가르침대로 은밀하게 해야 한다고 주장한다. 또한 세상의 영광을 추구하는 일은 그 반대의 결과를 낳음을 기억해야 한다. 명예를 돌릴 것을 요구받은 수혜자들은 오히려 욕을 할 것이다. 마지막으로 요한은 천국에서 얻을 영광을 바라볼 것을 강조한다. 이교인들의 공적 기부제도의 이미지들을 사용하여 순수한 동기에서 가난한 자들을 도와 준 기부자들에 대한 엄청난 천국의 상급을 묘사된다. 요한은 성경과 신학의 관점에서 그리스-로마 후원제도를 하나님의 후원제도로 변혁하여 신자들이 그 세계관 안에서 생각하고 행동하도록 유도하였다. 이러한 제도 속에서 천국의 보상은 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 구제와 헛된 영광에 대한 요한의 담론은 종말론적인 보상이라는 큰 그림을 중심으로 헛된 영광의 본질과 폐해, 그리고 극복방안이 체계화되어 있다. 기독교적인 후원제도에서는 가난한 자들에 대한 순수한 사랑의 실천과 엄청난 보상이라는 양립할 수 없을 것처럼 보이는 것들이 실현될 수 있다. 하나님에 대한 믿음과 천국의 소망으로 세속적인 헛된 영광을 극복할 수 있다.

Early church Christians recognized that vainglory was a great obstacle in the life of disciples who follow Jesus. John Chrysostom also frequently warned of the danger of vainglory. This article will analyze in detail John’s warnings against almsgiving for vainglory. This is related to the motive of charity, and John teaches how this sin negatively affects good works and how we can overcome it in many homilies. In particular, this is deeply related to the reward that God will give us in the future. This discourse will be examined in the background of patronage system which was an important economic structure of the society at the time. John warns that the pursuit of vainglory will result in great loss. Assistance to the poor benefits greatly us, but vainglorious charity takes away the rewards stored up in heaven. John insists that in order to overcome this vice, we should help the poor secretly according to the teachings of God, the best teacher of almsgiving. It should also be remembered that the pursuit of worldly glory has the opposite effect. The receivers who are asked to give their honor will rather condemn. Lastly, John emphasizes that we need to desire heavenly glory. Using the images of public donations of pagans, he depicts great heavenly rewards for donors who helped the poor out of pure motives. From the perspectives of the Bible and theology, he transformed Greco-Roman patronage into divine one, encouraging believers to think and act within this world view. In this system, heavenly reward plays a very vital role. John’s discourse on almsgiving and worldly honor is systemized in a big picture of eschatological reward. In Christianized patronage, seemingly incompatible things can be realized: an act of pure love for the poor and a great reward.
