야고보서 5:14의 “너희 중에 병든 자가 있느냐? (Is anyone among you sick?)”라고 번역된 문장은 대부분의 한글과 영어 번역본, 그리고 학자들에 의해서 육체적인 질병을 가리키는 것으로 해석된다. 그러나 이와 같은 번역과 해석은 몇 가지 면에서 부자연스럽다. 첫째, 서신을 마무리하면서 고난이라는 보편적 주제를 다루면서 다시 육체적 질병이라는 특정 주제를 다루는 것이 자연스럽지 않다. 둘째, 육체적 질병의 치유와 관련된 주제에서 구약의 선지자인 엘리야와 비를 위한 그의 기도를 예로 든 것이 자연스럽지 않다. 셋째, 미혹되어 진리를 떠난 자를 돌아서게 하는 것이 서신의 기록 목적이라면(5:19-20), 5:14의 병든 자는 영적 곤고함을 가리키는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 본 글의 목적은 야고보서 5:14의 ἀσθενεῖ τις ἐν ὑμῖν에 사용된 동사 ἀσθενέω가 무엇을 의미하며 어떻게 해석되어야 할 것인지를 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 ἀσθενέω의 신약성경에서의 용례, 기름을 바르는 것(약 5:14)과 병든 자를 구원하고 일으키는 것(5:15-16)의 의미, 비가 오지 않기를/오기를 기도한 엘리야의 예의 의미를 논의할 것이다. 이 논의를 통해 5:14의 ἀσθενέω가 영적인 질병, 혹 영적인 곤고함을 나타내기 위해 사용되었을 가능성을 제시할 것이다.

The sentence translated as “Is anyone among you sick?” in James 5:14 is interpreted as referring to physical illness by most Korean and English versions and scholars. However, such translations and interpretations are unnatural in several reasons. First, it is unnatural to deal with a particular topic of physical illness again while dealing with the general theme of hardship at the end of the letter body. Second, it is unnatural to exemplify Elijah’s prayer for rain inthe middle of dealing with the healing of physical diseases. Third, if the occasion of James is to bring back those who wander from the truth(5:19-20), the sick in 5:14 can be seen as indicating spiritual weariness. The purpose of this article is to examine what the verb ἀσθενέω in ἀσθενεῖ τις ἐν ὑμῖν(5:14) means and how it should be interpreted. To this end, I will discuss the usage of ἀσθενέω in the New Testament, the meaning of anointing(5:14), saving and raising the sick(5:15-16), and the example of Elijah who prayed for no rain/rain. This would suggest the possibility that ἀσθενέω in 5:14 is used to indicate spiritual illness or severe spiritual weariness.
