팀 켈러의 목회론

Tim Keller s Pastoral Theory: Focusing on Center Church

본 연구는 뉴욕의 리디머 장로교회의 설립자요 오랫동안 담임목사로 사역했으며, 현재는 “리디머시티투시티”(Redeemer City to City) 운동에 전념하고 있는 팀 켈러 목사의 목회론을 주제로 한다. 본 연구는 『팀 켈러의 센터처치』를 중심으로 하여, 그의 다양한 저술 그리고 그가 주관한 다양한 세미나에서 사용된 자료들을 기초로 하였다. 켈러의 목회론은 크게 세 가지 축으로 구성되어 있다. 그것은 “복음”, “도시(문화)”, “사역(교회개척)”이다. 이러한 세 개의 축 아래서 다음 몇 가지의 목회론적 주제들을 연구자는 찾을 수 있었다. ①복음 중심의 목회론, ②도시 중심의 목회론, ③문화(상황화) 중심의 목회론, ④사회정의(구제) 중심의 목회론, 그리고 ⑤교회개척 중심의 목회론 등이다. 물론 이 밖에도 가정 중심의 목회론, 일터 중심의 목회론, 기도 중심의 목회론, 변증 중심의 목회론, 선교적 교회 목회론 등을 그의 목회론 등도 발견되지만, 본 연구에서는 이상의 다섯 가지만을 켈러의 핵심 목회론으로 간주하였다. 켈러의 목회론을 평가하자면, 첫째, 켈러의 목회론은 복음에 대한 분명한 인식 위에 구축되었으며, 둘째, 개혁주의 신학 위에서 포용적이요 융통성 있게 구축되었고, 셋째, 탁상공론이 아닌 목회 현장 위에서 구축되었고, 넷째, 지성을 기초로 하여 변증적으로 구축되었다고 하겠다. 하지만 그의 목회론에도 조그마한 약점이 있는바, 그의 목회론이 인간의 판단을 지나치게 신뢰하는 이상주의적 경향이 있다는 점이다. 켈러의 목회론을 한국교회에 어떻게 적용할 수 있을 것인가의 과제가 남는다. 켈러의 목회론은 품질이 뛰어난 씨이다. 그런데 아무리 고품질의 씨앗이라고 하더라도 토양이 그 씨앗을 받아들이지 못한다면 열매를 맺을 수 없다. 켈러의 목회론이란 씨앗은 미국 뉴욕이라는 토양에서 개발되었고 그 토양에서 발화되어 열매를 맺었다. 과연 그 씨앗이 대한민국이란 토양에서 발화하고 열매를 맺게 하기 위해서 우리는 어떻게 해야 하는가? 그것이 오늘 팀 켈러를 공부하는 우리의 과제라고 믿는다.

This study focuses on the pastoral theology of Rev. Tim Keller, the founder and senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York, who is currently focusing on the “Redeemer City to City” movement. This study was based on Tim Keller s Center Church, his various other writings, and seminars he has hosted. Keller s theory of pastoral ministry consists of three main pillars. They are “Gospel”, “City (Culture)”, and “Ministry (Church planting)”. This writer was able to find the following pastoral ministry themes based on these three pillars. ① Gospel-centered, ② City-centered, ③ Culture/contextualization-centered, ④ Social justice/mercy-centered, and ⑤Church planting-centered. In addition to these, other themes such as family-centered, vocation-centered, prayer-centered, apologetics-centered, and missional church-centered. In this study, however, only the earlier five major themes are considered as comprising Keller s core pastoral theology. In evaluating Keller’s pastoral theology, this study finds the following: first, it is built on a clear understanding of the gospel; second, it is inclusive, flexible, and coherent with Reformed theology; third, it is based on pastoral experience, as opposed to mere theory; fourth, it is committed to apologetics based on rationality. However, there is a small weakness as well: an idealistic tendency to trust too readily in human judgment. There is relevance to Keller’s pastoral theology on the Korean church. While Keller’s pastoral theology is a high quality seed, it cannot bear fruit if the soil is not ready to receive them. Keller developed his theology in the soil of New York, NY, USA, where it bore fruit. What clues are there for us to bear fruit in the soil of Korea? This is the task of our study of Tim Keller today.
