『선라이즈』에 재현된 1920년대 미국 도시와 자극과 유희의 공간으로서 놀이공원

1920s’ Urbanity and the Stimulation and Pleasure of the Amusement Park in Sunrise

본 연구는 F. W. 무르나우의 1927년 작품인 선라이즈 의 배경인 1920년대의 미국 대도시의 맥락에서, 영화의주인공인 아내(the Wife, 작품에서도 ‘아내’로 명명됨)가 도시에서 겪는 경험을 조명한다. 본고는 특히 놀이공원장면에 중점을 두어, 놀이공원이 아내에게 제공하는 자극과 유희에 대하여 살펴보고, 시골에서 도시로 이동하는아내를 따라가며 그녀의 변화를 분석한다. 기존 연구는 유럽과 미국의 대립구조 안에서 영화를 해석하였고 도시의중요성과 아내의 변화에 주목하지 않았다. 그러나 ‘아내’와 ‘남편’(the Man)의 위기와 화해를 그리는 선라이즈 의공간적 배경은 주로 도시이며 이곳에서 부부는 새로운 체험을 하고 이 체험을 통해 관계를 회복한다는 점을 상기한다면, 도시의 중요성은 간과될 수 없다. 부부의 갈등이 해소되는 가장 중요한 계기를 마련하는 장소는 도시의다양한 공간 중에서도 바로 놀이공원이며 영화의 시간적 배경인 1920년대는 미국이 급격한 도시화, 산업화, 근대화를 겪을 때이다. 1920년대 놀이공원은 시골에서 가정이라는 사적인 공간에 얽매여 있는 아내에게 몸의 해방을경험할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 따라서 본고는 사적인 영역에서 공적인 공간으로 나아가는 아내가 지루하고 우울한 어머니 그리고 아내에서 즐거움을 좇는 여성으로 변하는 모습을 고찰한다.

This study explores how Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, directed by F. W. Murnau in 1927, depicts the 1920s’ American metropolis and represents the changes the unnamed Wife experiences during her stay in the city. Focusing in particular on the amusement park sequence, this paper examines the ways in which the amusement park stimulates her bodily senses and offers the pleasure that she lacks in her rural life. Sunrise is mainly set in the city and follows the couple’s reconciliation through their experiences in the urban space. The couple from the country confronts the conflict when the Man (also unnamed) starts an affair with the Woman from the City, and both plots to kill his Wife by drowning. The Wife forgives the Man, and the couple restores their love through urban experiences. The city of the early twentieth century in which Sunrise takes place is at the height of urbanization and modernization, and the amusement park the Wife visits offers her a different role besides a mother and a wife in the domestic sphere. It is enlightening to see the early twentieth century urban space in Sunrise. However, since Murnau traveled from Germany to the United States in 1926 and Sunrise was the first feature film he made in Hollywood, critics often see Sunrise as the product of a combination of German expressionism and the classical Hollywood cinema. As the reception of Sunrise is mainly determined by factors such as the background of the German filmmaker and the Hollywood-based production of the film, what the film is illuminating has been overlooked the amusement park in the city. My intention is to seek what the amusement park does to the Wife and to examine her change as she changes from a bored and depressed mother/wife to a pleasure seeker
