An Analysis of the Biography of Yu Gwansun and the New Concept of Biography

After considering the educational significance of biographies in the curric- ulum of the Korean language teaching, I judged that Yu Gwansun, the patri- ot, be placed in the Korean language textbook. Through the analysis of the biography of Yu Gwansun found in the Korean language textbook of the primary schools and about 50 different bi- ographies of Yu Gwansun published thus far, I found some incorrect and un- true facts and an exaggerated superhuman nature of Yu Gwansun. Taking this into consideration, I felt that we need to publish a correct bi- ography of Yu Gwansun based on the true facts.For that purpose, I tried to clarify the life of Yu Gwansun as it is by reviewing various related records, hearing evidence from friends and relatives, and doing some fieldwork (about her family and birth, school life and activities in Seoul and at home, her life in prison and death, etc.), and presented them as fundamental material for the writing of her biography. I also presented a new direction for the writing of the biography suggest- ing that it should portray the person with a human touch and in pursuit of the probable, not as an object of achieving a great work or a superhuman.
