The Analytic Description of Compound Nouns

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the morphological and syntactic struc- tures of compound nouns by analyzing 23,892 phrases of compound nouns of the morpho-syntactic tagged corpus constructed by KAIST. The structures of compound nouns are mainly classified as follows: N+N, N+N+N, N+N+N+N, N+N+N+N+N. To be more specific, the structures of compound nouns are classified into 73 types. We also featured which structures are more frequently used in Korean compound noun structures through the fre- quency analysis of those 73 compound noun structures. For the analysis of syntactic structures of Korean nouns, we considered N+N, and N+N+N. For the syntactic structures of N+N, we focused on the second noun, and for the syntactic structures of N+N+N, we divided it into two types: [N+N]+N and N+[N+N].
