유관순의 삶에 미친 이화학당 교육의 영향

현대 기독교교육적 조명

The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) to explore the influence of Ewha Hakdang (tranlated as Ewha school) education on Gwansun Yu s life, and (2) to draw implications of this influence for the current Christian school education. The educational idea and practice of Ewha Hakdang influenced Gwansun Yu s thought and behavior in three ways: (1) The daily chapel, bible study, prayer meeting, and yearly revival meeting at ‘Ewha Hakdang’ and Jungdong Church were the main sources for Gwansun Yu s faith development and patriotism through her school life. (2) The everyday life and the close relations with her colleagues at the dormitory of Ewha Hakdang contributed to Gwansun Yu s solidarity with the nation as well as the school community. (3) The study and group activities with many teachers, who were alumnae of Ewha and acted as role models for woman leadership in the society, empowered Gwansun Yu as a competent and dedicated woman leader. The current Christian school education faced various crises: the legal prohibition of the obligatory attendance at school chapels, its compromise with the college entrance exam-oriented education, the ceremonial, but not spiritually meaningful religious activities in school. The implications of Ewha Hakdang education, which could be appropriately applied to crises management of the current Christian school education, were drawn as follows: (1) spiritually and educationally dedicated teachers as role models should be recruited and nurtured in Christian schools. (2) Solidarity and community should be experienced through teaching-learning process as well as various student activities. (3) Students should be encouraged to take initiatives to experience the opportunities of extracurricular group activities for faith development and spiritual expression. (4) Christian leadership training programs through various social service activities should be offered. (5) Christian schools should develop strong partnership with local churches.
