The Irish experienced invasions from lots of other countries, especially, England’s 800 year rule. In the process of resisting against England and establishing nationalism, some writers wanted to find a way of the independence from England so they raised the Irish Literary Renaissance. The Irish Literary Renaissance was raised to get back the right of self-government of Ireland by some writers. Those who led it were Synge, Gregory, and Yeats. They needed to inspire the identity of the Irish for the independence of Ireland so they examined traditional myths of Ireland and tried to dig into the Gaelic culture. They tried to inspire the Irishmen with a idea of nation in the pursuit of the Celtic-identity. While their another personal goal was to secure their situation in Ireland. Because they were Anglo-Irish and constructed the identity based on the dichotomic thought between Anglo-Irish and the Irish. They realized that the insoluble opposition is between the Irish and Anglo-Irish. It meant that Ireland couldn’t be separated from England and couldn’t be a unified country through Irish Literary Renaissance. The leaders of the Irish Literary Renaissance for losing their identity and for trying to dig into the almost disappeared Gaelic and Gaelic culture. As a result, the Irish Literary Renaissance failed. Though their Cultural Nationalism was not supported by Irish people because of his ambiguous poetic style and language, of his background in race, religion and culture, and of the attack on the middle class’s philistinism in those days, the Irish Literary Renaissance writers’ desperate efforts could be considered as a significant contribution to Irish national literature.
