The Buddhism of Koguryo (高句麗) in the 6th century

6세기는 高句麗 佛敎가 본격적으로 발전되었던 시기였다. 이 시기에 造像된 佛像들과 승려들의 활동을 통해서 알 수 있는데, 불교에 대한 이해가 깊어지고 신앙의 계층이 확대되었던 것으로 생각된다. 이러한 모습은 敎學보다는 佛·菩薩信仰에 커다란 영향을 받았으리라 생각된다. 6세기에 조상된 佛像銘文을 통해 당시 고구려에서 千佛信仰, 彌勒信仰, 阿彌陀信仰 등이 믿어졌던 것으로 생각된다. 또 義淵과 慧慈와 같은 승려들의 활동을 통해 彌勒信仰과 法華信仰 등이 유포되었을 것으로 생각된다. 이러한 신앙의 信者들은 당시 왕실과 귀족 계층, 특히 평양 지역을 중심으로 하는 貴族계층이었을 것으로 생각된다. 6세기에 들어와서 거듭된 왕위계승상의 혼란으로 약화된 왕실의 위상을 극복하고자 노력하였던 平原王代, 嬰陽王代 왕실은 불교를 통하여 왕권 강화를 추구하고자 했던 것으로 보인다. 그러나 결국 왕실은 귀족연립정권의 한계를 극복하지 못했고 이러한 정치 상황은 7세기에 들어 고구려 불교가 쇠퇴하는 하나의 원인으로서 작용하였던 것으로 생각된다.

The Buddism of Koguryo is regarded to grow prosperous in the 6th century. The activity of monks and the buddhist statues carved in this century indicate that people has come to understand the buddhism very well and that level of people who believe buddhism is extended. It is believed to be influenced by the faith to the Buddha and a Bodhisattva. So we can figure out the buddhism of Koguryo in 6th century from buddhist statue and the activities of monks. In this period, people believes Chunbul(the thousand buddha) belief, Maitreya belief, Amitabha belief and Saddharma-pundarika belief. And it is the royal family or the aristocracy expecially in Pyungyang who believe buddhism. It shows us that King Pyungwon and King Youngang try to strenthen their regal power through the buddhism. But the royal family fails to overcome the limit of a coalition cabinet of aristocracy, which is thought to be one of the reason to make the Buddhism decline in the 7th century.
